High-speed downloading pauses

Postby nate123 » Mon Nov 30, 2015 9:50 pm

Downloading at high speeds (lets say 1Gbps) for a short time causes NZBin to pause, and wait for the disk to flush. The disk is an SSD and should be able to handle ~5Gbps or so of sustained sequential writes.

Nate,

NZBin has a 2 GB file buffer and when it is full (or when there are 32 unwritten files) it pauses the download until it has enough free space again. The reason why the write buffer gets full don't always has to be a slow disk. Each file coming from usenet is segmented in many small parts and rebuilding the original file with all the segments can be a intensive CPU eating job. Especially when there are also files being extracted or repaired in another thread.

I've done some tests downloading files at 500 Mbps to an external USB3 disk and all goes fine, but unfortunately I can't test this at 1 Gbps.
Regards,
André

Hi Andre,

Thanks for the response! Could you possibly make these configurable so that they can be tuned to the system? I am on a pretty beefy computer, so this tends to not strain my CPU, SSD, or Network. 1Gbps downloading uses about 30% of my CPU, and very little SSD r/w speed.

Hi Nate,

Yes that is a good idea.
In the next release this will be configurable.

Thank you.

Hi Andre -

Can you increase the available buffer options even higher than what's available in the latest build?
I have a 2 gigabit fiber connection and it stops to wait every 10 seconds, and I'm writing to a PCIe NVMe SSD that can handle over 2GB/sec. writes.

That'd be great.

Thanks!

Hi,

NZBin will be replaced by a new product soon that has tons of new features and bug fixes.
This new product handles extreme high connections like yours very well.

Free beta versions will be released soon.
If you want to become a beta tester, please check the announcements on our (new) facebook/twitter pages.
